At 17, Zahia Ziouani dreams of conducting an orchestra. Her twin sister, Fettouma, is a professional cellist. Since their childhood, they have been immersed in classical symphonic music. In turn, they now wish to make it accessible to all and in all territories.
Inspired by the life of Zahia Ziouani, one of the few worldwide renowned female conductors, the movie features standout performances by Niels Arestrup (A Prophet) and Lina El Arabi (Family Business). Divertimento is a tale of perseverance, gender bias, and racial discrimination within the elite classical music world, set against the backdrop of 1990s Parisian suburbs. It earned recognition at the 2023 Stony Brook Film Festival, winning the Special Recognition Closing Night Film Award and the Audience Award for Best Feature, through its inspiring portrayal of a young woman overcoming social and institutional barriers through music.
