About the workshop

In this workshop, learn about what it takes to create a photograph! What if instead of adding ever-more bells and whistles to our top-end cameras, we take away from the camera as much as we can while still getting a picture? And who would better guide you through this artistic experiment than Isabelle Desjeux herself, the creative behind the exhibition "This is not an exhibition"?

In this 2h30 to 3h workshop, learn about the real basics of camera, how we use light to take photos and the chemistry of silver-based photography, without a lens.

Make your own camera from a can, and take a photograph, or maybe 2, using real photo paper. And walk home with the camera and your photograph too, ready to be framed!

Suitable for adults or teenagers from age 14.

This workshop is part of the program EXPERIMENT

Location: Theatre, level 1, Alliance Française de Singapour

About Isabelle Desjeux

Isabelle Desjeux is a Singapore-based artist and researcher. Using her training in Molecular Biology, she creates new kinds of scientific method-based artworks. Working closely with scientists, she encourages others to cross the divide and tale on the role of scientist in her interventions, whether in a class, during a workshop, or as part of an installation. As such her work has often been labelled as participatory, with "experiment" being a strong part of her practice. She has been using camera obscura and pinhole photography as part of her practice and teaching since 2014.

She received her MAFA from Lasalle (2011), was the recipient of the French-Singapore New Generation Artist (2011), and of a Lasalle Research Fellowship (2017). Her work has been exhibited in museums across Singapore, in Japan and USA. She teaches regularly across disciplines from pre-school to post-graduate level, and currently runs a residency space in a pre-school, inviting artists to experiment and let children into their processes.
