Director: Quentin Dupieux

Cast: Anaïs Demoustier, Gilles Lellouche, Edouard Baer, Jonathan Cohen, Pio Marmaï

Rating: NC16 - Some sexual references and violence

A French journalist meets with Spanish surrealist artist Salvador Dalí on multiple occasions for an unproductive documentary project

Directed by Quentin Dupieux, this surreal and playful homage to the legendary artist Salvador Dalí was featured at major festivals, including Venice and Toronto. With a brilliant and eccentric ensemble cast—with multiple portrayals of Dalí by iconic French actors like Édouard Baer, Jonathan Cohen, and Gilles Lellouche—the film blurs the line between reality and absurdity with Dupieux’s signature style. Premiering to critical acclaim, Daaaaaalí was celebrated for its originality, humor, and bold narrative structure.

Stay with us after the screening for an 30min-engaging conversation (in English) with art historian Tanya Singh, who will delve into the surreal world of Daaaaaalí. Her talk will open with a look at the film’s narrative and its vivid tribute to surrealism—especially through striking visual references to Salvador Dalí’s art. She’ll guide us through the origins of the surrealist movement, from André Breton’s manifesto to Dalí’s rise as its flamboyant icon and his intellectual clash with Freud. Tanya will also connect surrealism to Singapore’s contemporary art scene, sharing where to find echoes of the movement in local galleries and artists. The session will end with an open discussion !
