Alpha, a troubled 13-year-old lives with her single mother, amid the context of a strange new bloodborne disease which slowly turns its sufferers to marble. Their world collapses the day Alpha returns from school with a tattoo on her arm, leading her mother to fear that she has contracted the disease herself.
Alpha was selected for the Official Competition at the 2025 Cannes Film Festival, where it received a 12-minute standing ovation during its screening. It was also presented as the opening film of the 58th Sitges International Fantastic Film Festival in October 2025. Tahar Rahim, who plays Amin, Alpha’s drug-addicted uncle, was nominated for a Golden Globe in 2022 for his performance in the series The Serpent. He is also known for his roles in A Prophet (2009) and The Mauritanian (2021). Golshifteh Farahani plays Alpha’s mother. The renowned Iranian actress is recognized for her performances in films such as About Elly (2009), which won the Silver Bear at the Berlin Film Festival. She has also been honored at the Cannes Film Festival for her contributions to cinema.
