VOilah! French Film Festival 2024
40th edition
From Thursday 14 to Sunday 30 November 2024, Alliance Française de Singapour had the honour to co-present the 40th edition of vOilah! French Film Festival part of the Francophonie programme of Ambassade de France à Singapour.
With this year's edition, Alliance Français projected 19 movies, from historical drama like The Count of Monte Cristo to love stories like Beating Hearts to animation movies like Animal Christmas Tales!
As part of the French Film festival, we had the pleasure to host special screenings followed by exciting sharing sessions with actors or experts, such as a poignant panel discussion about violence against women, and two Q&A sessions, allowing our guests to get an insight of the behind the scenes from the actors directly.
Let's rewind together these unforgettable meetings:
Kseniia Vokhmianina, Roberto Álvarez, Julian Li and Ramu Thiruyanam for FRENCH CINEMATIC ICONS.
Four days before the grand opening of the French Film Festival, we immersed ourselves back in French cinema with an amazing concert French Cinematic Icons: Bolling and Beyond.
From classical pieces like "Elisa's Theme" from The Shape of Water of Alexandre Desplat, or "Comptine d'un autre été" from Yann Tiersen to a Flute and Jazz Piano Trio from Bolling, the musicians captivated the public and left them ready for two weeks of French Cinema.
Women rights specialists and lawyers Sadhana Rai and Chloé Vialard for RABIA.
During the discussion, Chloé Vialard and Sadhana Rai highlighted the vital support available in Singapore for victims of violence, particularly through the Support Centre for women in the French expatriate community.
Established in December 2021, the Centre provides a safe, confidential space for victims of all forms of violence. It offers access to specially trained legal professionals and functions as a holistic support system for those in need.
Actors Camille Razat, Mélanie Robert and Franck Dubosc for PRODIGIES.
The film sparked questions regarding the portrayal of twins and the synchronization and coordination needed to perform these roles. Camille Razat and Mélanie Robert shared with us how their long-life friendship in real life helped them achieve this feat.
We also talked about their training with the piano, the learning of the special technique from the sisters Pleynet, and their meeting with the sisters.
As Franck Dubosc plays the role of the twins' father in the film, he shared with a lot of humor his journey of being a father and his performance as an apneist!
Director and actor Franck Dubosc for HOW TO MAKE A KILLING.
The discussion mainly focused on Franck Dubosc's dual role in the film as both actor and director and how him being the director of the movie influenced his play as an actor. If he was not playing, he was behind the camera, and when playing he was expecting specific reaction from the actors.
Dubosc also reflected on the evolving tone of his films, noting the shift from lighthearted comedies to darker narratives. He explained that this change wasn’t intentional but rather a natural reflection of his personal taste and, as he humorously put it, the realities of "getting older."
And with this the 40th French Film Festival comes to an end!
We warmly thank you, our visitors, guests, staff and partners for making this year's edition a success!
Au revoir and see you next year!
